Pre-authentication memory corruption via session setup race
Published May 20, 2025 · Updated Aug 5, 2026
Use-after-free in Linux kernel ksmbd 5.15 and later affected branches allows remote attackers to corrupt memory during Kerberos authentication. During concurrent SESSION_SETUP handling, one thread frees sess->user while another dereferences it before the pointer is cleared. Two unauthenticated connections to the same session can control the pre-authentication race, exposing kernel memory to corruption.
