CVE-2025-37917Network attack vector

Remote system hang via recursive Ethernet-driver locking

Published May 20, 2025 · Updated Sep 8, 2026

Improper locking in the Linux mtk_star_emac Ethernet driver allows remote attackers to hang affected systems with crafted traffic. In mtk_star_rx_poll and mtk_star_tx_poll, ordinary spin locking leaves interrupts enabled while DMA interrupts are re-enabled, allowing mtk_star_handle_irq to acquire the same lock recursively. Any remote peer able to sustain traffic to an affected MediaTek interface can wedge the CPU in interrupt context, stall networking, and hang the system without authentication or user action.
