Kernel crash via NTFS3 compression-flag race
Published May 8, 2025 · Updated May 11, 2026
NULL pointer dereference in Linux kernel NTFS3 5.15 and later affected branches allows local users to crash the kernel during file writes. The race lets FS_IOC_SETFLAGS clear an NTFS file's compression flag between write-path checks, so write_begin is taken from the wrong operations table. Triggering the crash requires local access to an NTFS3-mounted file and concurrent write and flag-changing operations.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
