Kernel warning via directory write request
Published May 1, 2025 · Updated May 11, 2026
Improper directory handling in the Linux kernel ksmbd server allows local users to trigger a kernel warning through an SMB write request. ksmbd_vfs_write checks write-access bits but, in affected code, fails to reject a directory inode before passing the file to __kernel_write_iter. The path requires an enabled ksmbd server, a configured SMB share, and an account able to submit a write against a directory.
