Local system hang via hibernation lock inversion
Published May 1, 2025 · Updated May 11, 2026
Improper locking in affected Linux kernel versions allows local users to hang the system through the hibernation compressor parameter. hibernate_compressor_param_set() blocks on system_transition_mutex while param_lock is held, reversing a dependency created by device registration and power-management notifier locks. Exploitation requires local access to write the compressor sysfs parameter during the conflicting operation, and the demonstrated consequence is a deadlock that interrupts the host.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
