Root command execution via traceroute shell metacharacters
Published Jul 10, 2025 · Updated Apr 7, 2026
OS command injection in Polycom HDX Series before 3.1.11 hotfix 2 allows remote authenticated users to execute commands as root over Telnet. The devcmds console passes the lan traceroute argument to a system shell without neutralizing metacharacters, so injected command substitutions execute with root privileges. Reachability requires enabled Telnet and either command-shell credentials or an HDX configuration that permits unauthenticated console access.
