SYSTEM command execution via reflected SMB authentication

Published Jun 10, 2025 · Updated Feb 26, 2026

Improper access control in the Windows SMB Client allows remote authenticated users to execute commands as SYSTEM through SMB reflection. The client accepts a DNS name containing marshaled target information, LSASS strips the suffix, and the resulting authentication is relayed to the originating host. A domain account must register or poison the name and coerce authentication; successful reflection requires SMB signing not to be enforced.
