Service interruption via catastrophic regex backtracking
Published Jul 7, 2025 · Updated Jul 7, 2025
ReDoS in get_configuration_file in Hugging Face Transformers before 4.51.0 allows remote attackers to interrupt model serving. The function applies the greedy config.(.*).json expression to attacker-influenced configuration filenames, enabling catastrophic backtracking and excessive CPU use. Exposure requires an application to pass remote-controlled filenames into this library path; exploitation causes resource exhaustion, latency, or a service hang without data disclosure or modification.
