Application crash via unchecked MD2 skin name
Published Apr 4, 2025 · Updated Jul 23, 2025
Stack-based buffer overflow in Assimp 5.4.3 allows local users to crash an importing application with a malformed MD2 file. MD2Importer::InternReadFile calls strlen on the untrusted skin name and passes the unchecked length to memcpy into a fixed-size stack aiString buffer. The user must be able to supply and import the crafted file; the demonstrated consequence is an out-of-bounds write and application crash.
