Arbitrary file overwrite via flawed state management
Published Mar 31, 2025 · Updated Apr 2, 2026
Improper state management in Xcode Instruments before 16.3 allows context-dependent attackers to overwrite arbitrary files via an app. Apple identifies deficient state management in Instruments but has not disclosed the affected routine or state transition that permits the overwrite. Exploitation requires a user to run an app on a Mac with an affected Xcode release, and the bounded consequence is modification of attacker-selected files.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.

Attacks
What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
