Local file disclosure via shortcut dereferencing
Published Apr 1, 2025 · Updated Apr 13, 2026
Link following in Firefox and Thunderbird before 137 allows attackers to upload a local file after a user selects a malicious Windows .url shortcut. The Windows file-open dialog dereferences the shortcut because it is invoked without FOS_NODEREFERENCELINKS, substituting the linked file for the selected shortcut. The attack requires local shortcut selection and exposes only the substituted file; Mozilla reports no effect on other operating systems.
