Resolver crash via crafted cached Resource Record Sets
Published Apr 7, 2025 · Updated Apr 7, 2025
NULL pointer dereference in PowerDNS Recursor 5.2.0 allows remote attackers controlling a DNS zone to crash the resolver. Processing and caching specific Resource Record Sets from the crafted zone causes an illegal memory access; PowerDNS has not disclosed the precise cache locus or invalid dereference. The attacker must publish the zone and induce resolution through it; the documented consequence is a process crash without system compromise.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
