SYSTEM privilege escalation via CLFS use-after-free
Published Apr 8, 2025 · Updated Aug 10, 2026
Use-after-free in the Microsoft Windows Common Log File System driver allows local users to gain SYSTEM privileges. Microsoft has not disclosed which CLFS object is freed prematurely or which driver path later reuses it; an observed exploit turns the resulting memory corruption into a process-token overwrite. Standard-user execution is required, and Microsoft reports that the observed exploit path failed on Windows 11 24H2 because its kernel-address leak required SeDebugPrivilege.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
Is a vulnerable build present?
Compare these published version ranges with your installed build and any vendor patches.

Attacks
What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
