Process crash via unchecked metadata overlap arithmetic
Published Mar 28, 2025 · Updated Jul 24, 2025
Heap-based buffer overflow in HDF5 1.14.0 through 1.14.6 allows local users to crash a parsing process with a crafted HDF5 file. H5F__accum_free subtracts an unchecked overlap_size from the metadata accumulator size and passes the resulting length and shifted source pointer to memmove, causing an out-of-bounds heap read. Execution requires a local low-privileged user to cause an HDF5-linked process to open and close the crafted file; the demonstrated consequence is a process crash.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
