SYSTEM code execution via unchecked cleanup paths
Published Apr 8, 2025 · Updated Aug 10, 2026
Improper link resolution in Windows Installer on affected Windows releases allows local users to elevate privileges to SYSTEM. CleanupTempPackages trusts attacker-influenced TempPackages registry paths and deletes the referenced folder as SYSTEM without verifying installer ownership. Low-privileged local access is required; the deletion primitive supports replacement of Config.Msi rollback scripts and SYSTEM code execution.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
