CVE-2025-27498Public exploit

Unauthenticated plaintext use via uncleared decryption buffer

Published Mar 3, 2025 · Updated Mar 3, 2025

Improper authentication in RustCrypto ascon_aead before 0.4.3 allows attackers to use unauthenticated plaintext after failed decryption. The decrypt_inplace path in asconcore.rs returns an error for an invalid tag but leaves decrypted bytes in the caller-provided buffer. Exploitation requires a consuming program to process that buffer after the failure, enabling chosen-ciphertext manipulation and plaintext exposure.
