CVE-2025-27423

Shell command execution via unescaped tar member name

Published Mar 3, 2025 · Updated May 2, 2025

Command injection in Vim 9.1.0858 through 9.1.1163 allows context-dependent attackers to execute shell commands via a crafted tar archive. The bundled tar.vim plugin passes an archive member name unescaped into an Ex :read command, so filename metacharacters become additional Ex or shell commands. A user must open the archive and select its malicious member, and execution depends on the configured shell parsing the injected text.
