Administrator escalation via unchecked user-property patch
Published Apr 30, 2025 · Updated Apr 30, 2025
Improper access control in Laurent Cozic Joplin Server before 3.3.3 allows remote authenticated users to gain administrator privileges. The PATCH /api/users/:id route checked authorization against the stored user object, then saved attacker-supplied properties such as is_admin without validating the changed values. A non-admin account and valid session are required; successful exploitation permits administrative actions across the server.
