AMF crash via unhandled policy response
Published Mar 12, 2025 · Updated Mar 12, 2025
Denial of service in the AMF in Open5GS 2.7.2 allows attackers controlling a UE to crash the AMF through timed gNB handovers. The gmm_state_authentication function treats an unexpected Npcf_AMPolicyControl response as an invalid service and reaches an assertion because no matching case handles it. A UE must repeatedly switch between two gNBs at the vulnerable timing; the crash disconnects active UEs and blocks new registrations until the AMF restarts.
