Host file overwrite via unchecked configuration symlink
Published Feb 19, 2025 · Updated Feb 19, 2025
Path traversal in the krun handler in Containers crun 1.19.1 and earlier allows attackers to write host files via a malicious image. libkrun_configure_container uses write_file_at to open .krun_config.json beneath the image-controlled rootfs without preventing symlink traversal. The image must be run with the krun handler, and the runtime's user must already be able to write the targeted host path; exploitation creates or overwrites that file.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
