CVE-2025-24860Network attack vector

Unauthorized network access via unchecked ALTER ROLE

Published Feb 4, 2025 · Updated Feb 15, 2025

Incorrect authorization in affected Apache Cassandra releases allows remote authenticated users to expand restricted network access. The AlterRoleStatement.authorize method accepts non-superuser ALTER ROLE requests containing data-center permissions because affected code checks only superuser-status changes. An existing login with restricted data-center access is required; the user can rewrite that role's permissions and reach otherwise barred data centers or IP/CIDR groups.
