Local privilege escalation via unreliable caller identification
Published Sep 4, 2025 · Updated Feb 26, 2026
Improper input validation in Android 13 and 14 Package Installer allows local users to gain elevated privileges through a crafted install launch. InstallStart.onCreate obtains the launching package with the unreliable getCallingPackage API, then uses that identity when evaluating the install source and its permissions. Exploitation requires user interaction with the attacker-initiated package installation flow; successful abuse bypasses the intended installer permission boundary.
