Privilege escalation via reused io_uring buffer list
Published Mar 7, 2025 · Updated Aug 5, 2026
Use-after-free in affected Linux kernel releases starting with 5.19 allows local users to read and write kernel memory through io_uring. IORING_REGISTER_PBUF_RING reuses an emptied legacy io_buffer_list, then exposes stale user mappings when the list is upgraded instead of allocating a fresh structure. An unprivileged local process can drive the registration sequence without user interaction, gaining arbitrary kernel reads and writes that enable privilege escalation or a kernel crash.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
