Security bypass via inconsistent path canonicalization
Published Jan 14, 2025 · Updated Jun 9, 2026
Improper path resolution in Microsoft Windows MapUrlToZone allows remote attackers to bypass zone protections via a crafted path. FileCrack's FetchFileQueryFragment treats a question mark as a query delimiter and ignores following traversal, while NTDLL canonicalizes the same device path to a remote UNC share. Successful exploitation requires user interaction with attacker-controlled content and can expose information when a caller trusts the incorrect Local Machine zone classification.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
