Security feature bypass via double-slash UNC path
Published Jan 14, 2025 · Updated Jun 9, 2026
Security feature bypass in Microsoft Windows allows remote attackers to misclassify a remote file as local via a crafted UNC path. In CrackUrlFile, MapUrlToZone skips only one separator after LanmanRedirector; a second slash yields an empty hostname and URLZONE_LOCAL_MACHINE for an SMB resource. User interaction is required, and the documented impact is limited to information exposure through bypassed trust-zone protections.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
