Security bypass via trusted knownfolder path misclassification
Published Jan 14, 2025 · Updated Jun 9, 2026
Improper path-equivalence resolution in Microsoft Windows MapUrlToZone allows remote attackers to bypass zone security checks via a crafted path. MapUrlToZone treats the Network Places known-folder identifier followed by three backslashes and a remote UNC share as Local Machine content. Exploitation requires user interaction with attacker-controlled content and can expose data, including NTLM credentials, by applying local-path trust decisions to a remote resource.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
