Authenticated file read via unrestricted download path
Published Mar 1, 2025 · Updated Apr 8, 2026
Arbitrary file read in Jeff Starr Simple Download Counter 2.0 and earlier allows remote authenticated users to read local server files. The simple_download_counter_download_handler accepts an attacker-controlled file path and returns the referenced file without restricting the resolved path to an approved directory. Author-level WordPress access is required, and readable files can include wp-config.php and operating-system files such as /etc/passwd.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
Is a vulnerable build present?
Compare these published version ranges with your installed build and any vendor patches.

Attacks
What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
