CVE-2025-15497Network attack vector

Authenticated service interruption via epoch-key assertion

Published Jan 30, 2026 · Updated Jan 30, 2026

Reachable assertion in OpenVPN 2.7_alpha1 through 2.7_rc4 allows remote authenticated users to terminate the VPN process. When a peer advances exactly epoch_data_keys_future_count epochs, receive-key housekeeping mishandles the highest valid key in its window and fires ASSERT(). An authenticated peer with a valid session can therefore exit the affected client or server process, interrupting its VPN service without reading or altering tunnel data.
