Subscriber-to-Administrator escalation via misconfigured capability check

Published Jan 23, 2026 · Updated Jan 23, 2026

Incorrect authorization in Melapress Role Editor 1.1.1 and earlier allows remote authenticated users to grant themselves Administrator. The save_secondary_roles_field function uses a capability check that admits Subscriber-level accounts before applying attacker-selected secondary roles. Any valid Subscriber account can therefore acquire full WordPress administrative privileges, but unauthenticated visitors cannot reach the flaw.
