Local process crash via malformed ELF headers
Published Feb 17, 2025 · Updated Feb 18, 2025
NULL pointer dereference in eu-read in GNU Project elfutils 0.192 allows local users to crash the process via a malformed ELF file. The handle_dynamic_symtab function dereferences the result of gelf_getphdr without checking for NULL while scanning broken program headers for PT_DYNAMIC. Exploitation requires local access and crafted ELF input, and the documented effect is limited to crashing the invoked command-line process.
