Subscriber-to-Administrator escalation via arbitrary option updates
Published Apr 25, 2025 · Updated Apr 8, 2026
Missing authorization in SeaTheme BM Content Builder 3.16.2.1 and earlier allows remote authenticated users to gain Administrator access. The ux_cb_tools_import_item_ajax action accepts option names and values and updates WordPress options without checking the caller’s capability. Subscriber-level access is sufficient to set the default registration role to Administrator and enable registration, allowing creation of an administrative account.
