Administrator escalation via unchecked capability submission
Published Nov 4, 2025 · Updated Nov 4, 2025
Privilege escalation in Simple User Capabilities 1.0 and earlier allows remote attackers to promote any WordPress account to Administrator. The suc_submit_capabilities() function processes capability changes without verifying that the caller is authorized to manage users. No authentication or user interaction is required, so changing an existing account's role grants full WordPress administrative access.
