Code execution via path traversal and symlink race
Published Feb 13, 2025 · Updated Feb 13, 2025
Path traversal and a race condition in Lexmark printer firmware allow attackers to execute code and modify filesystem data. The embedded web server uses an unvalidated PATH_TRANSLATED value in basic_auth.cgi file operations, while httpd follows an attacker-created symbolic link to create an arbitrary file. Network-adjacent access requires no authentication for the traversal path, while the symlink path requires low-privileged code execution and can execute code as root.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
