Code execution via misclassified ZIP symbolic links
Published Nov 19, 2025 · Updated Nov 19, 2025
Path traversal in 7-Zip 24.09 x64 allows remote attackers to write files outside the extraction directory through a crafted ZIP archive. The ArchiveExtractCallback link parser classifies a Windows absolute target carried as Linux link data as relative, validates a prefixed path, and creates the link. Exploitation requires archive extraction with elevated rights or Windows Developer Mode; a later member written through the link can place executable code at an attacker-chosen location.
