Arbitrary file write via symlinked archive members
Published Sep 22, 2025 · Updated Sep 22, 2025
Symlink following in NeuML txtai 9.0.0 and earlier allows remote attackers to write arbitrary files via an untrusted embedding index. The embedding-index load path validates archive member names but passes symbolic-link members to Python tar extraction, allowing link targets to redirect writes outside the extraction directory. Exploitation requires an application to load an attacker-supplied compressed index; writes inherit the privileges of the txtai process and can overwrite accessible files.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
