Code execution via lost nested-archive Mark-of-the-Web
Published Jan 25, 2025 · Updated Feb 26, 2026
Protection-mechanism bypass in 7-Zip before 24.09 for Windows allows remote attackers to execute code after opening a crafted archive. During nested-archive extraction, 7-Zip File Manager fails to copy the Windows Zone.Identifier alternate data stream from the outer archive to extracted files. A user must open the malicious archive and then launch an extracted file, which runs with the current user's privileges without the normal Mark-of-the-Web warning.
