CVE-2024-9313Public exploitNetwork attack vector

User impersonation via mutable PAM identity

Published Oct 3, 2024 · Updated Nov 22, 2024

Authentication confusion in Canonical authd before 0.3.5 allows remote authenticated users to impersonate another broker-managed user. The PAM module permits PAM_USER to change after an initiating application has set it, binding the attacker's credentials to the selected account. A broker-managed account and a PAM consumer that fails to verify the final PAM_USER, such as affected su, sudo, or ssh versions, are required; login and passwd are unaffected.
