CVE-2024-9312

Account impersonation via deterministic UID collisions

Published Oct 10, 2024 · Updated Oct 10, 2024

Incorrect user management in Canonical authd before 0.3.6 allows local users to gain another account's privileges via a colliding username. GenerateID deterministically hashes attacker-chosen usernames into a small UID range, while uniqueness checks cover only the expiring local cache. Exploitation requires the ability to register a chosen identity-provider username and log in where the target UID is absent from that cache, granting access as the target account.
