Contributor-to-Administrator escalation via arbitrary option writes
Published Oct 25, 2024 · Updated Apr 8, 2026
Improper authorization in Mapster WP Maps 1.5.0 and earlier allows remote authenticated users to gain administrator access. The mapster_wp_maps_set_option_from_js() handler accepts an attacker-chosen WordPress option and value without requiring the manage_options capability. Contributor-level access is sufficient to enable registration and set the default registration role to administrator, allowing creation of a new administrative account.
