CVE-2024-8938Network attack vector

Remote code execution via writable function pointer

Published Nov 13, 2024 · Updated Nov 13, 2024

Memory corruption in Schneider Electric Modicon M340, Momentum, and MC80 controllers allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code. A signed UMAS write can place shellcode in executable data memory and overwrite a writable secondary function pointer, while a crafted public Modbus/UMAS call redirects execution to that shellcode. Exploitation requires a man-in-the-middle position during UMAS authentication to obtain signing material before modifying controller memory; success grants arbitrary execution on the PLC.
