CVE-2024-8088Network attack vector

Program hang via malformed archive path ancestry

Published Aug 22, 2024 · Updated Nov 3, 2025

Denial of service in CPython zipfile.Path allows remote attackers to hang programs by supplying a crafted ZIP archive for traversal. The _ancestry helper stopped only when a path equaled one slash, so repeated leading separators could make posixpath.split return the same path indefinitely. Reachability requires an application to accept attacker-controlled ZIP files and traverse entry names with zipfile.Path; ZipFile is unaffected.
