Process crash via recursive pattern-resource object loop

Uncontrolled recursion in Xpdf 4.05 and earlier allows attackers to crash a PDF-processing process via a crafted PDF pattern resource. A cyclic PDF object reference in a pattern resource is followed without loop detection, causing infinite recursion until the process exhausts its stack. Processing the crafted file is required, and the documented consequence is a process crash rather than data disclosure or modification.
