Local privilege escalation via insecure temporary files
Published Jun 12, 2025 · Updated Jun 17, 2025
Privilege escalation in Revenera InstallShield 2021 R2 through 2023 R2 allows local users to gain elevated privileges via crafted MSI setups. Standalone MSI packages with multiple InstallScript custom actions create temporary files in a directory whose permissions permit low-privileged modification. Exploitation requires local low-privileged access and execution of an affected package; the public advisory does not identify the file, directory, or overwrite sequence.
