Local privilege escalation via symbolic-link file deletion
Published Nov 22, 2024 · Updated Dec 3, 2024
Link following in VIPRE Advanced Security 12.0.1.214 allows local users to escalate privileges and execute arbitrary code as SYSTEM. The SBAMSvc Anti Malware Service follows an attacker-created symbolic link during file deletion, redirecting its privileged operation to an attacker-chosen path. Exploitation requires low-privileged code execution on the host and can turn arbitrary file deletion into SYSTEM-level code execution.
