Browser script execution via malformed Markdown rendering
Published Aug 7, 2024 · Updated Aug 8, 2024
Stored XSS in Open WebUI 0.1.105 allows remote attackers to execute JavaScript in a user's browser through a malicious model prompt. The response renderer converts model-generated Markdown to HTML but skips encoding within code blocks, so uneven backticks can place an event-bearing HTML element outside the sanitized code region. Execution requires the model to reproduce the malformed Markdown and a user to render the response; script access is limited to the page context.
