Command execution via shell-interpolated VCS URLs
Published Jul 15, 2024 · Updated Nov 4, 2025
Code injection in Python Packaging Authority setuptools before 70.0.0 allows remote attackers to execute commands through crafted VCS URLs. The package_index download path interpolates Git or Mercurial repository URLs and checkout revisions into os.system shell command strings without neutralization. Exploitation requires a consuming application or build workflow to pass an attacker-controlled VCS URL into that path, and commands run with the privileges of the packaging process.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
Is a vulnerable build present?
Compare these published version ranges with your installed build and any vendor patches.
- Affected versionversion=69.1.1 <70.0
