User impersonation via unchecked federation origin
Published Jun 25, 2024 · Updated Aug 29, 2024
Origin validation error in the Conduit federation API before 0.8.0 allows remote attackers to impersonate users through malicious EDUs. The API accepts the purported user origin carried by most ephemeral data units without confirming that it belongs to the authenticated remote server. A remote Matrix server with federation access is sufficient; the bounded consequence is forged transient user activity without data disclosure or service interruption.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
