CVE-2024-6197Network attack vector

Client crash via invalid stack-buffer free

Published Jul 24, 2024 · Updated Feb 13, 2025

Improper memory deallocation in curl 8.6.0 through 8.8.0 allows remote attackers to crash the client via a crafted TLS certificate. The ASN.1 utf8asn1str() error path calls free() on a four-byte stack buffer, letting some allocators overwrite nearby stack memory. The path is reachable only with GnuTLS, wolfSSL, Schannel, Secure Transport, or mbedTLS builds; the documented likely outcome is a client crash.
