CVE-2024-6119Network attack vector

Application crash via mistyped otherName SAN

Published Sep 3, 2024 · Updated Jul 14, 2026

Type confusion in OpenSSL 3.0.0 through 3.3.1 allows remote attackers to crash applications via crafted X.509 certificates. The do_x509_check path reads a GENERAL_NAME union member for the wrong SAN type when comparing an otherName against an expected name. The crash requires an expected DNS name, email address, or IP address; chain validation alone and the affected branches' FIPS modules are unaffected.
