Root privilege escalation via reversible ID drop
Published Apr 22, 2025 · Updated Apr 22, 2025
Local privilege escalation in PPP before 2.5.2 allows local users to regain root through pppd's passprompt plugin. In promptpass, the child drops only its effective IDs with seteuid and setegid before execv launches the configured promptprog, leaving saved root IDs recoverable. Exploitation requires setuid-root pppd to load passprompt and execute a user-controlled promptprog; default distribution launches do not meet these conditions.
